John Waters was the writer, director, and producer of the original 1988 Hairspray. He also was a co-producer of the 2007 musical film.
In 2008, it was confirmed that he would be writing a sequel to the 2007 version for New Line Cinema.[1] This sequel, entitled Hairspray 2: White Lipstick was later cancelled in 2010.[2] In 2019, John Waters told Variety that HBO had also asked him to write a Hairspray sequel, but that is was not being produced.[3]
